As Above, So Below

If you made friends with the Angels,

you'd first notice their elegance, grace, and composure.

But sit a while, and you'll learn a bit about their laments.

For they see the world in fire from above.

and wish to save it by the law of eternal bliss.

Yet the ones below aren't fond of saving.

While the One Above is fond of silence.

If you made friends with the Devils,

you'd first notice their pride, deceit, and anger.

But sit a while, and you'll learn a bit about their will to live.

For they live in a world bathed in flames.

Yet they refuse to yield, even to a fate-bound defeat.

Even when the ones above are judging.

Even when the one below is dreaming a perpetual, smoke-infused fever dream.

If you made friends with both,

you'll learn a secret: that they envy one another.

The Angels envy how the devils tunefully dance on the slippery edges of fate,

how they hold their head up with hellfire-forged resilience,

and how their wits amuse the One Above.

The Devils envy how the angels turn everything divine,

how warm the candles of innocence shine,

and how the halos blissfully soothe one's mind.

If fate was any different,

they would talk to one another,

drink and dance by the warmth of hellfire,

and, every once in a while,

teach us the worst and the best parts of being human.

P.S. Why isn't there a painting/sculpture that depict them as friends?
